Today while editing the running scene of dragon fly I found my self in a awkward situation. I was intending to use a lamp post to create a wipe transition between 2 shots however adobe CS6 does not have enough control options over its basic transitions to allow me to position my wipe correctly. This was a major inconvenience as it limited my creativity within the program. This however is the first time I have used the new adobe software as I'm used to working on final cut pro 7 and X. Using these programmes I would be easily capable of creating this transition. My inexperience in using the adobe software is the main reason for my issue so to solve this I need to improve my current skills on premiere or import my project into after effects, this will avoid me having to resort to exporting the files and adding the effect in final cut which is time consuming and can reduce the quality of the image.
Deadlight studio diary work
30/10/12
Today was my first screening with a client on the rough cut for the Deadlight studio diary. The overall experience was positive there was no negative feedback and all 5 members agreed it surpassed there expectations. Unfortunately this meant when I asked for any possible improvements I didn't have a lot to go on however I did get some more names that they wanted to include on the thank you section on the credits.
The second part of the evening consisted of trying to get the finishing group interview for the documentary however as I predicted conflicting thoughts on answers lead to much of this interview being unusable. Due to this I decided to refer back to my initial ideas for this film and conduct shorter one on one interviews in a hand held style so it would match the rest of the current film. This was far more efficient however slightly disappointing as it cinematically wasn't as professional as I would have liked.
This experience highlighted two things to me firstly the final product is much more appealing to the intended audience than to your self. This is probably due to the fact you have watched it through repeatedly for hours meaning it lost its amusement factor. Secondly something that has occurred on other shoots, when working with clients you have to be more authoritative. I realised this during the initial interview it wasn't being taken as seriously as it could have been which lead to time being wasted however as soon as I took charge and changed the process it was a more productive shoot.
21/12/12
This is the first time that I had screened this fly on the wall documentary to someone who wouldn't be described as my target market, now in my previous experience of screening Mr the reactions of the audience were far more positive and interactive. I did expect this as a film is always going to be more appealing to the client and it's target audience however the lack of interaction during the screening allowed me to critically evaluate the film shot by shot. The problem with this is i picked up on all the minor mistakes I had missed during the initial screening, many of the shots where poorly colour graded and even badly colour corrected as some didn't match one another. This was unavoidable while filming due to the amount of different light sources however my attempts correct these we truly appalling. In the future I should always make sure I have someone critically evaluate the film after the initial viewing with clients to pickup on any mistakes.
25/12/12
As I started reading the art of digital colour correction by Steve Hullfish I realise how I'd made such a major error on the colour for this documentary I haven't paid enough attention to the primary colour grade or colour correction although I've set my highlights and shadows correctly I didn't understand the proper way to set tonal balance. As the shots were poorly white balanced due to lighting on location I spent hours playing around trying to get the whites to match correctly from shot to shot however what I should've done was looked at the RGB parade display all of vectorscope to check the waveforms this would have allowed me to balance the colours more accurately as I would have been able to see which colours needed adjusting to keep the shots correctly balanced this will save me time and given me a better result at the end.
Mulberry restaurant
14/11/12
Ben and myself went up to the college restaurant to take some stills and video for there website. We went up before lunch time to get some shots of the tables before anyone was there. The shoot went well however we should have taken a reflector in addition to the led light we took but the biggest thing we didn't consider was how busy the restaurant got before we finished this made space an issue and we had to leave sooner than expected, we didn't miss anything however i found i dont like being rushed on set. I really should try and allow more time on set to stop my shots being rushed.
Music Tech live performance
19/12/12
We spent the afternoon filming a live performance of one of the music tech groups, this multicam production included three cameras, a lighting setup and some external audio. The shoot went off without too many issues however personally I feel we'd taken insufficient lighting for the location this was due to our subjects blending in too much to the background. This was due to the fact we had no backlight on the shoot and the backdrop was very dark on a normal lip synced shoot i could have spent time taking close ups but as this was also being recorded live it wasnt possible. Things i need to watch out for in the future are un predictable lighting situations extra lighting is always the solution or if possible using larger aperture lens giving a softer depth of field and allowing more light to hit the camera. This being said the video could have had much more motion if we could have used proper video cameras rather than DSLR, I'll also take this into account if im ever asked to do this again.
20/12/12
I handed in the final video and the clients involved seemed pleased which was surprising seeing how basic there video was however i was glad that i had finished it in such a short time as it helped both them and me out, because of my efficiency iv bin asked to film the re shoot when they've got time. This is good professional practice as repeat customers help in any business.
